THE DAMAO TAKE
Our verdict
A conditional used buy, not an automatic bargain. Favor a verified, comfortable pair with a return window over an impressive original retail price.

An older flagship needs a different review
The WH-1000XM3 is a good example of why a used-product decision cannot be made from a specification sheet alone. The model offers wireless listening and active noise cancellation, but the pair in front of you has its own history. Ear cushions, hinges, battery condition and the seller's return policy can have more influence on the purchase than a reputation earned when the product was new.
We would begin with the asking price relative to a new pair of headphones you could actually buy today. A used premium model should leave room in the budget for wear and uncertainty. If the saving disappears after replacing cushions or resolving a charging problem, the original product tier has not helped you.
The useful features, in context
Sony specifies up to 30 hours of battery life with noise cancellation enabled, along with USB-C charging and a wired audio option. That is a manufacturer maximum for the model, not a guarantee for an aged battery. Playback settings and condition affect the result. The supplied cable and case also deserve a line on the listing checklist, because accessories are easily omitted from secondhand packages.
A wired option can be useful at a desk or with compatible travel equipment. However, buyers should check the source device's connector and their intended use rather than treating every audio cable as interchangeable. For wireless use, test pairing with your own phone and laptop if the seller permits it. A product that works with a demonstration device is not proof of your complete setup.

Fit is the part a product page cannot settle
Comfort is personal. Try the headphones for longer than a quick photo opportunity, with glasses if you normally wear them. Listen at a moderate level and check whether both sides behave consistently. Examine the pads for compressed foam or peeling material, and move the hinges gently through their normal range. Cosmetic marks and mechanical wear are different questions.
For calls, record a short sample in an environment similar to the one where you will use the headset. Do not infer microphone quality from music playback. We have not measured isolation, sound quality or microphone performance on a DAMAO test unit, and we would not rank this older model against current products without a consistent comparison.
Where the value can disappear
A cheap pair with no meaningful return path asks you to absorb all the uncertainty. That can be acceptable for an enthusiast who knows what to inspect, but it is a poor default for someone buying their only work headset. We would prioritize a clean, documented example with a chance to test it over a lower price attached to vague condition claims.
If your current headphones still work well, replacing worn consumable parts may be worth investigating before replacing the whole set. For a first purchase, weigh this model against available new alternatives with a warranty. The sensible winner is the pair that meets your needs at an acceptable total cost, not necessarily the one that once carried the highest price.
Pros and cons
What works
- Wireless and wired listening options
- USB-C charging
- Manufacturer-rated long battery life when new
What to weigh up
- Battery condition varies on older units
- Pad and hinge wear need inspection
- No DAMAO comparative sound or isolation measurements
Who should buy it?
Best considered by value-focused buyers comfortable assessing used equipment. A new model with a straightforward warranty is the safer purchasing choice when predictable support matters more than the lowest asking price.
The conclusion
A conditional used buy, not an automatic bargain. Favor a verified, comfortable pair with a return window over an impressive original retail price.
Check the exact model, total cost, condition and return terms before committing. A product is good value only when it is right for your needs.
